Willoughby Tucker I'll always love you: a farewell to love, innocence and regrets
Hey, y'all so I forgot that I had a blog, and I used to post it, it's not very uncommon for me with autism and ADHD. However last night my phone showed notification for release of Ethel Cain new album, Willoughby Tucker I'll always love you, an album I have been very much enthusiastic about and been dying to listen to it, so I jammed up my headphones and gave it a proper listen and I have some very clear ideas and opinion on this album.
Backstory:
Ethel Cain known by her real name Hayden Anhedonia is a 27-trans singer from Florida and uses Ethel Cain as a stage name and stage persona which many artists do. her first release was the preacher's daughter which is a typical indie record with country, and metal influences. However, the main point of attraction for the album was the lore and story it told. Yes, it is a concept album about Ethel Cain, a girl from religious household who runs falls in love with three people, runs away from her house and hometown and meets the love of her life who at one point begins to pimp her out to other men and finally in a drug-induced episode murders and eats hers. The themes religious abuse, trauma, love, regret and longing are very prevalent on Preacher's Daughter. It is the first one in the trilogy of albums that she plans to create.
Willoughby Tucker I'll always love you: A tale of innocent love which was never allowed to see the light of future:
This album is more of the prequel which discusses the events five year prior to the first albums storyline. there is a song name A house in Nebraska, which discusses the main character recounting and remembering her romance with one of the boys. this album is about that boy. so, I personally had no expectations of this album i could not predict what sonic pallet this album would have what genre it would have would it be romantic or tragic or anything. so, after listening to it thrice times i would personally describe this album in one word that is grief and regret. there is sadness and regret written all over this album. it tells the story about how Ethel first got jealous of Willoughby for being close to her sister Janie however soon he is this violent and loud presence in her life, and she wants to be in love with him and loved by him but her own overthinking and skeptism held her back. Once she is in the relation with him, she is always afraid of the future and what might happen to them.
it is a classic doomed romance and then he disappears for no reason, left up to speculation for the audience, while the titular heroine is left to be sad and remanence the good times and a hope which will never come true. the album is very effective which its vivid lyrics and somber yet visual music. as a 19-year-old boy living in a small town though it is a capital however it being so backward this was the most relatable album i have ever listened, it perfectly captures the fears and regrets of the first love. how we wished it would last forever but it can't. it portrays the dark reality perfectly that love only isn't enough to concur world or life still we have the power to cherish it and keep it as the most priceful souvenir we get from out short life. she was killed by the end, but the romance of Willoughby and Ethel lives forever.
However, the plot twist and the thing that makes it most heart wrenching is the fact that Willoughby actually was suffering with his own issues and was quite abusive to Ethel. this toxic dynamic adds the new layer to the narrative showcasing how we sometimes ignore the toxic trait of those we love, no moral policing here not to tell you that it is toxic or anything. It is the sad reality of us doomed lovers. so, coming right back to the original album I was shocked and love what i got. the songs are perfectly structured with them being moody, sad and joyful at the same time. it is an epic record with songs taking up to 15 minutes maximum. the short attention span is a bit in trouble here but honestly it is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good that you won't even realize your 15 minutes are gone so do give it a listen.
